Born on December 29, 1979 in Iserlohn, Germany, as Stephanie Schmidt, Mei Lin Schmidt is the only child of Alexander Schmidt, a mathematician, and Chu Hua Li, a musician.

From an early age, she has shown more interest in the civil engineering business of her grandfather, Joachim Schmidt, then the more cerebral interests of her parents. Still, she showed her intelligence from an early age and was able to jump classes twice while enrolled at the Gymnasium an der Stenner in Iserlohn, where she finished as best of her class in 1996, before moving to enrol in the Technische Universität Dortmund for a civil engineering degree, finishing a year ahead as a Diplom Ingenieur in 1998 and began work for her grandfathers company, Schmidt Tiefbau, in the same year.

While working for Schmidt Tiefbau, she proved that she could get her own hand dirty and got the respect of the workers.

In the years around the Millennium, she also developed a very strong taste for latex and BDSM and dominating her sexual partners. Around the same time, she decided to put more emphasis on the Chinese part of her heritage, playing up her oriental look, and started to wear Chinese dresses, as well as legally changing her name to Mei Lin, much to her father chagrin and her mother’s delight.
